THURSDAY 24th July 2014 NEWS The ruling Patriotic Front in Northern Province has pledged to protect street vendors in Kasama. Commenting on a statement issued by the Kasama Municipal Council through its town clerk, Maseka Njapau of moving all street vendors to designated places; PF regional secretary Everist Chela told Mano News today that the remarks were detrimental to his party’s governance. Mr. Chela warned that his party will not sit idle and watch its people being victimized. However, Mr. Chela was happy to note that the town clerk clarified that the move will be done gradually and with the engagement of stakeholders. ***************************** On Tuesday, Kasama Municipal Council Town Clerk; Maseka Njapau said his council will soon move all street vendors to designated places in a bid to promote health. But Mr. Njapau’s statement yesterday morning ignited mixed feelings among stakeholders in the district during a live phone-in program on radio Mano dubbed, “Hot Issues” forcing him to clarify in our 13:00 Hours News bulletin that the move will be done with the engagement of stakeholders and not otherwise. *************************** Two people have died on the spot while five others are nursing injuries after the Toyota Regius Bus bearing Registration number AIB 150 they were traveling in overturned along the Kasama-Luwingu road due to excessive speed. And the Zambia Police through its Facebook page disclosed that the accident happened yesterday around 18:00 hours. The deceased have since been identified as Alex Mabila and Wibroad Mulenga aged 45 and 35 respectively. Meanwhile, the injured are admitted in the Kasama General Hospital while the bodies of the deceased are lying in the same hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem. ******************************* The Lungu Royal Establishment has ordered members of the public to stop commenting on the appointment of Senior Chief Tafuna of the Lungu speaking people of Mpulungu District. The Lungu Royal Establishment said this through Chief Zombe of Mbala in an interview with Mano News. Chief Zombe charged that it is against tradition and culture to discuss royal succession matters in the public domain. The traditional leader has since warned that the Lungu Royal Establishment will not hesitate to take legal action against those who may be found wanting. ***************************** A resident of Nkolemfumu in Kasama District says the standoff between the government and the Bemba Royal Establishment over the appointment of paramount chief Chiti-Mukulu has affect development in the Province. Frank Mwendachabe, told mano news that the standoff will derail development in the area if not resolved quickly. Mr. Mwendachabe has since appealed to both government and the Bemba Traditional council to swiftly resolve the matter. ********************************* Kasama District Commissioner Kalanga Bwalya has warned the public to stop encroaching on the airport land. He said all the people that have built their houses on the airport land are living illegally and will all be removed. Mr. Bwalya revealed that a contractor has been engaged to upgrade the airport to international standards and that only people who built houses before the land was demarcated will be refunded. Speaking later in an interview, Kasama airport manager Raphael Sakala said investigations were carried out the moment information was received that unknown number of people had encroached and were putting up structures on the airport land. He said after clarification, he cautioned all the people that had started constructing houses not to go any further because their structures were illegal but to no avail. Government has engaged a contractor to upgrade the Kasama airport to international standards. ****************************** The Food Reserve Agency-FRA in Kaputa district has opened the crop marketing season and started buying maize from farmers. A check at Chipili Satellite Depot this morning found farmers already selling their produce to the agency. And an official from FRA in Kaputa said the agency has started buying maize in ten depots in both Kaputa and Nsama districts while the exercise in the four remaining depots will commence after the construction of slabs. He said the exercise in the area has started owing to the reduction in moisture content which is now at the recommended 12.5. per cent. The official said the agency was committed to pay farmers within a week after supplying their produce. FRA is targeting to buy 91,000 x 50 kilogram bags of maize and 10,000 bags of rice from farmers in both Nsama and Kaputa districts before the end of the marketing season on 31st October 2014. **************************** Some stakeholders in Kasama have expressed concern at the delay by government to commence the maize marketing exercise in the district. Speaking in separate interviews, AVAP Northern Province Coordinator Christopher Chikwanda and his JCTR Counterpart Felix Chiwela said the delay will have an adverse effect on the part of farmers planning the coming farming season. Mr. Chikwanda has since appealed to the district commissioner Kalanga Bwalya to intervene in the matter. And JCTR Northern Province Coordinator, Felix Chiwela has expressed hope that the Food Reserve Agency will adequately prepare for the payment of farmers once the maize marketing exercise commence. Efforts to get a comment from Kasama District Commissioner, Kalanga Bwalya failed by press time. ***********ENDS**********
