Because they don’t. Rats are clean, people are too busy talking to look closely, and the boy — Christopher, in the Broadway play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” — looks very closely. He is precise and he watches everything and he gets annoying only when he’s upset: as in Act I when, after learning that his father has betrayed him, he starts screaming out one of his beloved numbers — “4,096! 4,096! 4,096!”
