Television was created by a Scotsman. Of all the countries I have been to I have to admit that British Television is superior. The dramas created by the BBC and ITV are superb, sports coverage is magnificent and the comedies here are so good that many offshoots went to America.....All in the Family, The Office, Threes a Crowd., ( just to name a few ) ....all were created and started their life here in Britain. We currently have a programme called Gogglebox. The concept is so simple that it is brilliant. It consists of different families watching television...and their reactions to what they are seeing. All just sit in their lounges....watching telly. It is THE most hilarious programme....and a fascinating study into how the average person reacts to what they see and hear. I would take the concept further......to film someone watching the people who are watching television.....because just like they make comments on tv programmes so could the watchers , watching the watchers....and make comments about their comments. Are you with me so far ? In Britain, around this time, many major retailers try and outdo each other to put out the best Christmas advertisement. As you can imagine....not one of them even mentions Christ. Weve had ads about snowmen that come to life and fly all over the world ( I have no idea why, either ) and penguins coming to life and seeking a mate ( dont even go there )...and of course that jolly fat man in a red suit. Everything is possible...except the reason for the season. Recently a retailer created the most heat rending advert....to me anyway. I sobbed like a baby....I really did. It said nothing about Jesus but it touched me the second I knew what was coming next. Heres the scene......its the 1st world war. Its Christmas Eve. The Germans are in their trenches....the British in theirs.....separated by no mans land. .....a strip of land, not very wide, that neither side controlled. The Germans start singing Stille Nacht ....so hauntingly beautiful that tears sprang to my eyes. The Britts, hearing this, started singing the English version .....Silent Night. So, there were two sides, singing about Jesus , in the middle of a war, on a silent day ( no guns blazing ), , on Christmas Eve. This is an actual , factual account of what happened next. A Britt popped his head above his trench, raised his hands to show he was not armed ...and walked into no mans land. The Germans, seeing he wasnt armed, did not shoot.....and, as other Britts followed, so the Germans came out of their trenches, onto no mans land....to meet, shake hands with, swap photos and introduce themselves to each other and to wish each other a merry Christmas. This account can be read in any history book of the first world war. Someone had the idea to play a game of football. Here were these enemies playing and laughing together....in the middle of a war. It had to come to an end, sadly......and, as each side went back to their trench, a young British soldier reached into his pocket and found that the young German soldier he had shaken hands with, had slipped a bar of German chocolate into his pocket....probably the only chocolate that young German would ever see again. The logo of the ad read Christmas is for sharing. Well, Im in floods of tears because I know this actually happened ( not the chocolate bit ) .....but the thoughts it engendered...on the waste of so many millions of young lives, due to war.....and that even in the midst of it....two enemies could put all thoughts of killing aside......and celebrate the birth of Jesus......who both sides knew was the Saviour of the world. If someone tells you that to celebrate His birth is not biblical ......please remind them that when He was born, God caused angels to appear shouting Halelujah and that shepherds were sent throughout the area to proclaim the JOYOUS GOOD NEWS of His birth. God caused that. So how is it not biblical to also celebrate ? Those soldiers knew to celebrate....by singing about Him , then meeting, then playing with and sharing ....with their sworn enemies...the fact that tomorrow was Christmas day. ONLY Jesus could have brought that about. Not biblical to celebrate ? Tell that to God. Watching the tv watchers was wonderful. Was there a dry eye in a living room ? NO. From the German guy, married to a Britt, sitting there hearing Silent Night sung in his own language.....watchin his eyes well up with tears ....to every other watcher having the same reaction....caused me to cry yet again. You see.....not one family , in this programme, has ever professed to be a believer...apart from a very liberal female vicar who was just SO delighted that men could now marry men ......but I can tell you this.....every person on that programme , watching that advert , had the Gospel message in 60 seconds......love and peace.....for that is who and what Jesus represents. As they watched, and cried, all for different reasons......the Holy Spirit would have ministered to each heart......for isnt it He who draws all men to God ? Not biblical to celebrate Christmas ? I believe the truth to be far different to that. I believe that it it NOT biblical........to NOT celebrate the birth of Jesus......on ANY day. Merry Christmas, everybody. May the love of Christ be shed abroad, in the hearts of all those involved in war, around the world, this Christmas. I believe we can all pray that that will be the case. God bless you as you pray for all those who do not know Him.
