The Ethiopian government was unusually frank in its assessment of potential risks for investment in Ethiopia, though not to its own citizens who are subjected to a daily dose of tired propaganda. In its prospectus issued to international investors (to tab sovereign fund from the international market) the government lists political tension, high level of poverty, war with Eritrea, famine, strained finances, low level of currency reserves and the dangers of relying on a foreign country to access to the sea as potential hazards. Investors ignored those concerns and helped the government raise 1 billion dollars. Honesty pays. And I hope the government one day will be as honest to its own citizens as to foreign investors.
