The Gluttons Waistband Psalm 12:8 ...what is worthless is - TopicsExpress

The Gluttons Waistband Psalm 12:8 ...what is worthless is exalted by the human race. Observation: The psalmist has declared that there are no faithful ones remaining in the human race, that everyone has become liars speaking from deceptive hearts. He concludes by saying, The wicked wander everywhere and what is worthless is exalted by the human race. Application: When Im in the pit of despair, the only way to look is up. And it is always true that as my gaze ascends to Him, I realize that He is still on the throne, still working in my behalf despite the bleak outlook presented by the world and its dark circumstances. Indeed, God speaks in verse 6 of the Psalm saying, Because of the oppression of the afflicted and the groaning of the poor, I will now rise up. He goes on to make this most marvelous promise, I will put the one who longs for it in a safe place. So it comes down to this: do I really long for a safe place? Is that really what my heart yearns for? Do I strain to find that place of rest and security in Him that He promises? In moments of honest reflection, I realize that there may be within me a longing for something more than merely the safety of His covering. What is it, Lord? Is it revenge for a wrong recently suffered? Does part of me long for justice after unfair treatment at the hand of another? Or perhaps part of me longs for more time... time to accomplish more, or to accumulate more of the things this world treasures? But Jesus is saying that if my longing is for a safe place, He will put me in it. I rather imagine that there must be an exclusivity to that longing in order for me to be put there. Once placed in it, I will fit perfectly because He has designed it just for me. It will not expand like the waistband of a gluttons pants... It will not accommodate all these other longings that have been so hard for me to lay down. But lay them down I must. My eyes must be fixed upon Him and Him alone. Verse 7 promises that the Lord will guard me, He will protect me ....from this generation forever. In that place of protection everything that I formerly exalted will have passed into insignificance, and I will be awestruck by the magnificence of His beauty, the boundlessness of His provision, and the unchanging nature of His love Prayer Father, I know You have waited patiently as I longed for things other than the safety and protection You have promised to provide. Longing for any destination but You has proven so very unfulfilling, so unsatisfying. Please forgive me, Lord. Thank You for pointing me back to the only one in whom all my true needs are met.
