The Huawei Ascend Mate The Huawei Ascend Mate might not have the best name on the market but it does have a pretty decent specification, with that 6inch screen leading the way, with a 1280×720 resolution the display really is great and not to be sniffed at. Inside the beast it has a Quad-core Huawei K3V2 1.5Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM to get things moving, it comes with 8GB of storage space and can be expanded to 32GB with a microSD card purchase. It uses a micro-SIM and has an 8MP rear camera and 1MP front camera, connection wise it is capable of all the usual bluetooth, wifi, and USB connects – with the added bonus of once it’s got the SIM in it, 2G and 3G are available too. Feature wise – Huawei has marketed this device as being battery impressive with what they describe as a “Super Large” battery which will give 2 days of usage from a single charge, whilst this maybe doesn’t hold up 100% the battery life in our experience is very good and right up there with other tablet reviews. Another feature is the “One Hand Use” with which it is claimed that because of the large display you can operate the smartphone with one hand – however we found this to be a bit optimistic with the unit just being too big for this (or maybe we’ve got small hands?!). The front screen “Easy Panel” is a nice addition though and allows you to add all your commonly used apps to the front panel, finally on the feature front “Guiding Wizard” is not a creepy old man leading you through the forest to show you some magic, but instead is a GPS map tool that uses the phone’s camera with directions laid over the top to give you live directions – nice! So, this gadget has a lot going for it but it has a few negatives too, we found the OS to be a bit glitchy and fairly slow at times – especially given the decent spec. The problem with a smartphone trying to be like a tablet is that you end up with neither, it’s not very likely that you will hold this up to your face to make calls as it is simply too big and you’ll look a bit of a berk, but I suppose it is okay if you want to hold it out in front of you. Overall this is a very decent effort from Huawei..
