The International Arbitration Attorney Network Urges Intervention In Barotseland By Her Majesty’s Government The lawyers of the International Arbitration Attorney Network who are serving as counsel to the Barotse National Freedom Alliance (BNFA), including William Kirtley, Christophe Dugué, Sylvana Sinha and Dire Tladi, have written to the Queen of England asking for her assistance in having Her Majesty’s Government support for Barotseland’s bid to have its legal status determined by the International Court of Justice . Since announcing its determination to regain independence, after 50 years of violations of the Barotseland Agreement 1964, by which the 800-year-old nation became a part of Zambia, Barotseland has become a member of the UNPO , initiated a case against Zambia before the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights for the violation of human rights by the Zambian Government that have taken place over the past five decades, and over 10,000 Barotseland representatives have signed a PCA arbitration agreement offering to have the status of Barotseland determined peacefully, on the basis of public international law. President Sata, who recently died, refused to participate in negotiations with the BNFA, in PCA arbitration, or to even defend Zambia before the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights, but the IAA Network is hopeful that his successor will be more open to determining a peaceful way to end the past 50 years of oppression suffered by the people of Barotseland, reopening talks with the Barotse National Freedom Alliance and its leader,Hon Clement W Sinyinda . By- William Kirtley, of IAA Network NOTE: The IAA Network is the leading legal network of international arbitration practitioners and independent arbitration law firms.
