The NSW Police Transport Command is reminding commuters to be vigilant with their personal safety while on public transport. In some recent instances, belongings including wallets, phones and laptops, were taken from people as they were boarding a train or while they were seated in carriages and not aware to what was happening around them. Police Transport Commander, Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell, urged those on public transport to remain alert while travelling and have a good sense of their immediate surroundings. “We are urging commuters to take care of their personal belongings and be mindful of their surroundings while travelling on the transport network. “We have seen some opportunistic ‘snatch and grab’ incidents where bags and laptops have been stolen from people. “These have been items that were next to passengers or perhaps on their laps and not secured,” Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said. “It is important to remain alert on the journey and have a general understanding of who is around you. “By taking simple measures commuters can minimise the risk of their belongings being stolen,” Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said. Train travel tips: When waiting for a train at night stand at the “night safe” area (indicated in blue on the platform) to make sure you board the train at the carriage closest to the guard’s compartment. Avoid sitting near the train exit doors and try to sit near other passengers. In an emergency, use the emergency help points located throughout stations, or seek assistance from police. Always report any anti-social behaviour or harassment and program emergency numbers into your phone. Hold onto your belongings, when at the station or on the train, and ensure you have an understanding of who is around you. Bus travel At night, wait at the bus stop in a well-lit area. If possible, always wait near other people rather than on your own. If waiting on your own, be alert to your surroundings, and hold onto your belongings rather than placing them on the ground or on a seat. When on board, consider sitting near the bus driver, especially if the bus is relatively empty or at night. When walking from the bus stop, take a path that is well-lit or organise for someone to pick you up. Anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
