The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the claims by terrorist group Boko Haram, following a new video posted online with the claim that Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Islamic militant group is still alive. Briefing journalists in Abuja, the Director Army Public Relations Brigadier-General Ibrahim Attahiru said the army has engaged technical hands and experts who are examining the video to determine its authenticity or otherwise. It will be recalled that a security task force spokesman in August said the wanted Islamist Insurgent Commander Abubakar Shekau “may have died” from a gunshot wounds after a clash with soldiers on June 30, but in a video posted online recently, a man resembling past images of Shekau taunted the regional military spokesman who suggested he had been killed. And with the new development, the Nigerian Army however says investigations have been launched to verify the authenticity of the video. On the recent Yobe killings, the Army Chief says the Military has commenced offensive operations aimed at apprehending the culprits behind the gruesome murder of over forty students of the College of Agriculture in Gujba and other communities. The army however says it cannot work alone without the support of locals in identifying suspicions persons in their various communities. Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru added that relevant sources are also providing intelligence to ensure that the truth is out at the end of the day and on the war waged against the terrorist group, he claims that there has been an improvement in the general security arrangements in the north-eastern part of the country in a bid to nip the insurgency in the bud.
