The Original Cascade Tunnel. Opened for service in 1900 and replaced by 1929, this tunnel has never seen a diesel locomotive and has collapsed in the middle, allowing water to pool up and burst out the other end of the tunnel in surges. At one point, they built a path partway into the other end, but it was washed away with the next surge of water and now stops about 100 feet away. Now this is the only way to safely go inside. Summer 2011. The tunnel which bypassed this one was opened in 1929 and can still be viewed from public roads and from Amtraks Empire Builder trains 7 and 8.
