The autumn sun had vanished as Naomi closed the car door with a heavy thud. She stood at the side of the road in the evening drizzle and looked up at the flat. With a deep sigh and a sense of foreboding, she examined the window she was looking through just a few hours ago and wondered how different her life would be now she had to start it all over again. It felt like she was either too old to start again or too young to carry on until her own inevitable demise. Her feet patted through the water on the pavement up to the front door of the flat. She put the key slowly into the lock, not sure if she wanted to go in on her own. Although Aaron had been gone for nearly two weeks now, the flat now felt totally empty with no hope at all of it being filled with his laughter and gregarious nature. As the lock turned, she thought she heard an echo of the key in barrel, like the door to a vast cave being opened for the first time in hundreds of years. The door silently opened and she slowly took a step in. Closing the door behind her, Naomi looked up at the stairs and had the same memory as Aaron had when he was in the furnace.
