The clarion call is out. An amazing article on Societal Perceptions on Entrepreneurship by Peter Mũya H Businesses were formed as a knee jerk reaction to failure. The were second or third choice careers. The failures in life, the E student or those who didnt even complete school became local tailors, plumbers, grocery storekeeper, local transporter, roadside snack seller. While elsewhere these dreams were nurtured to produce world class enterprises, a tailor transforming into a fashion icon like Pepe Jeans or Ellesse, a grocery store transforming into Shop rite Checkers, Clicks, a transporter metamorphosing into Avis, a roadside snack seller becoming a McDonald, ours were trampled. The founders never quite believed in their dreams. The enablers never quite got together to facilitate the dream. In the end, I travel to my boyhood town in Muhoroni and the same same shop RAFIKI GENERAL STORE has probably seen better days and changed hands over the last 20 years. In those 20 years, Mark Zuckerberg is born, goes to school, dares to dream and right now church billions that alien like dream to my local enterprenuer. Our contentment with taking the crumbs while foreigners scramble for this region is baffling. They are happy dishing jobs for a salary rather than creating an ecosystem of a self sustaining economy that produces and consumes from within. Its time to waken the sleeping giants. Yesteryear local enterprenuer had guts out of circumstances but we have an opportunity to take the plunge out of choice and re-write the history of our economy. Where are you men / women of courage.
