The counts are still coming in on Empty The Shelter for the area - TopicsExpress

The counts are still coming in on Empty The Shelter for the area but so far its over two thousand pets adopted areawide today. I really, really, REALLY want to feel nothing but happy for such great numbers, but honestly, Im conflicted. I have to wonder if there are really two thousand people in the area that can afford the monthly and yearly expenses of a pet but seriously couldnt afford the $10 and $25 fees many shelters have been regularly discounting their fully vetted pets. I hope these adopters were polled because I want to understand why people would wait for today to adopt a pet when lines are guaranteed to be long and and its probable they may not get the dog or cat they had their eye on to be the best fit for their home when this would not have been an issue earlier in the week, or really, anytime all summer when dozens died every day simply for lack of a loving home. Was it the old truism if you give something away for free you soon have none of it? But these are living beings, not ice cream cones. So Im happy for the happy numbers. But only time will tell what percentage of the pets that left shelters for free today will be returned a month and six months from now or show up on swap pages or Craigslist. I am praying very few, and that todays adopters are patient and understanding with their new pet, go slowly with introductions, and if they need help, will enlist a good positive-methods-only trainer and will cherish their new family member AS a family member, and for life.
