The declining voter turn out is definitely a big concern. Druk Nyamrups report on Absentee In-Person voting is quite comprehensive and definitely seems like the right way to me. However I was almost certain the government would not support an amendment at this stage. But what baffled me is how they justified it would be a disrespect to the Throne! Its worrying when politicians try to use the sanctity of the Throne to suit their own conveniences. I wish they adopted the same principle when they discussed their entitlements! What would be disrespectful is if our democracy fails. What would be disrespectful is if our political leaders fail to live up to the expectations and aspirations of the King and the people. What would be disrespectful is we fail to elect capable and sensible leaders. And all of this could be averted if as many of us as possible participate in the election process. But in the present scenario, as much as we would like to, there are genuine difficulties and I think the onus is on the parliament to facilitate maximum participation. If the governments stand is not to amend the act, for whatever flimsy reasons, I wonder why they wasted the time and resources to conduct consultations in several districts. #sly The report is available on Nyamrups website druknyamrup.info
