The difference is probably the lawyers. Zimmerman had or collected the money for the best legal defense while Marissa probably made due with a public defender. That is another reason there is such a disparity in races in prison. If you cannot afford a good lawyer, you make do with one who will cop a plea to a lesser charge. That is what they hoped would happen with Zimmerman, they overcharged big time hoping he would plea bargain down to something and they still get their conviction. That is the way our prosecutorial system works now. They dont care if the person is really guilty, they just want to keep their record of convictions high.
