There are two stories here... one is obvious... the abusive behavior by Officer Heart -- then the compassionate behavior of the other officer who responded. There are those who get into positions of power and then abuse their authority... because they believe that they can get away with it and a badge gives them permission to treat others as they see fit and the system will protect them simply because they belong to a certain profession that in our society, we overly revere. Then there are those who came to serve and only use their power and authority with rationality, compassion and competence. The reason we have so many rogue cops today are two factors: we admire and celebrate First Responders especially after 9/11 and (2) after 9/11 we very willing to trade or freedoms for security (Patriot Act, hiring more police, etc.). So out of fear, we hired police officers in droves and way to many ego maniacs and control oriented individuals now had the authority to be abusive... They became bullys with a badge! We must weed these folks out and celebrate and reward the good cops who do their job with respect for the people they serve.
