There should be different degrees of marriage. Traditional marriage could be maintained for people who need the legal contractual agreement that someone is committed to them and children their union may produce. Then there should be another kind of domestic partnership where you are given tax breaks and rights for your partner if the need arises. If that type of partnership decides to produce or raise children, then they should enter into a contractual agreement that they will always care for those children, making it into the first type of binding contract. Marriage is not about theology or sanctity of a romantic relationship. It is about producing, fostering and nurturing our future. Making it into an argument for anything else is just silly.
