These days, despite owning a pretty considerable, very eclectic ( but heavily Country-based) collection; my available time to listen to music is limited; so I was disappointed when tuning into a local Community radio station this morning. I expected to; and looked forward to hearing Country music; both international and domestic; contemporary and traditional; as was the case in the past. The presenter; whom I like and admire greatly; and whose knowledge of the Australian traditional industry is extremely extensive and usually very entertaining; sounded the same but somehow different. Id heard that sweeping changes had occurred at the station, in the quest for perhaps mainstreaming the content. After only four songs, I switched off. I could have been listening to any one of countless generic breakfast programmes around the nation. ONE Country song out of four that I listened to. Very disappointing.... We are supposed to be The Country Music Capital. Once again, it appears we still have such a long way to go, to continue earning that title. A 24-hour, 100% Country Music content, local-based but Australia-wide radio station would be a great start; as would a dedicated venue (preferably licenced; and offering food and Country Music (every day of the week). I keep imagining a place that had some form of live Country Music performed at least 3-6 nights per week; and the rest of the time, it would still have Country Music on tap; in the form of a dedicated jukebox (or current equivalent); and CMC on a big screen ( instead of SPORT!) on the wall. Like-minded locals and tourists would always be made to feel welcome and it would soon become known as the place to go in Tamworth for Country Music and accompanying refreshment and relaxation; ANY day or night of the week... I will continue to dream....
