This Sunday is the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Germany. The World Cup is my favorite sporting event because it is one of the few human activities that bring the entire world just a touch closer on a grand scale, even amid the rivalries. Im not sure any other human activity does this. Not the Olympics. Not Christmas. Anyway, because I am a fan of this coming together, I thought it would be a good idea to have some friends over to watch the beautiful game. Before coming, some friends have asked, Wait a moment. Who will the house be cheering for on Sunday? I didnt think this was so important as the coming together but I guess it is and because those who sit on the fence usually get in trouble (and deservedly so) this is the situation. Im neutral and a lover of good sport. That said, I am also a U.S. AND German national raised in Puerto Rico who grew up playing soccer with a decidedly Latin American influence. Though a German national, if I had to say who I identify myself with I would unreservedly say with the New World, the Americas and the spirit and flavor of the Americas, which is why I have always favored teams from the Americas whenever they played teams from elsewhere. Perhaps its also why Miami is my home, a confluence of various cultural streams. So technically, while Kruseville welcomes all wholeheartedly, in the spirit of friendship, fun and sportsmanship, Kruse, the man himself (and German national), is cheering for Argentina this Sunday.
