This is the first part of CUTTING A WHIP. The next following will be how I plait the thong. Many years ago, I could cut, pare down and plait a four strand stock thong for a white hide or red hide team whip in about 8 minutes, now because I am older I am on about 10 minutes to do one. Who cares if it takes me 10 days. Doesnt matter, I am the only one that has to be pleased. Years ago the whip trade was really strong and no one within the trade would show anyone outside their immediate families anything about the trade. I was extremely fortunate that William Edgar Lawrence of Baulkham Hills in NSW showed me the trade and when he passed away the foremost whip maker in Australia at that time, Thomas David (Tom) Hill showed me the finer work in kangaroo. Both these wonderful old men left me their knowledge and held back on absolutely nothing. Therefore it behoves me to pass that knowledge on. I hope on these pages I have succeeded in doing part of that. These two videos are the only ones that I have made and it seemed a pity that there was not some record of the trade in its basic form, so here they are. Both of these men, Eddie and Tom live in my memory and I think of them daily, and still miss their company and their counsel. Eddie has been gone since 1978 and Tom I guess about 15 or more years. Wonderful men, the likes of which we may never see again.
