This is the old truss bridge at Calaveritas which Don Cuneo says was built when he was a young lad. It was just discovered that the county plans to replace the historic bridge with a new 2 lane bridge, which will still have a 1 lane road at each end. And so New Years Eve in Calaveritas has now evolved into a SAVE THE BRIDGE community effort! Come sign the petition and join us on the bridge at 5:00 for a photograph that will be front page news on New Years Day. Weve already convinced the county to put a delay on the project, hold another meeting at which any of us can voice our views, and to involve historians & archaeologists in the final decision. Local historians Judith Marvin & Julia Costello are donating hours of their time to have Calaveritas recognized, forever, as a historic district,thus protecting its many layers of early California life, where 800 people once lived in close quarters. This could be as simple as a few sentences about your relationship to Calaveritas, and why you are concerned about its protection. These comments will be given to the county along with the petition. Go there New Years Eve (tonight) at 4PM to help make and place luminaries along the road, which is a New Years Eve tradition there. After that they will be making tortellis in the Costa Store for all to enjoy. The event will go on all evening so show up anytime.
