This summer were also featuring faculty recommendations for films that pertain to their areas of study. Our first recommendation is a film about Cuba, coming from our Latin Americanist Dr. Berquist. She writes: Julian Schnabels 2000 film Before Night Falls stars Javier Bardem as the gay Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. It tells the story of Arenas life during the years of the Cuban revolution, including the oppression of artists, intellectuals, and gays in the 1960s and 1970s. Arenas leaves Cuba during the notorious Mariel Boatlift, when Castro opened Cuba for those who wanted to flee to the United States from April to October of 1980. Arenas lands in New York, where he faces new challenges. Though this film is decidedly R-rated and definitely not for the homophobic, it is beautifully shot, acted, and scored, and features Arenas haunting poems of love for his home of Cuba.
