This was really hard to watch... In 1995, I volunteered as a Body Escort to take my fellow Chief Petty Officer, Jerome Boot, from Keyport, Washington to Spokane Washington, where he grew up, and turn him over to his Foster Parents. I had roomed with Jerry in the Chiefs Barracks at Subase Bangor, and also his apartment in Port Orchard before I got my own place in Poulsbo. We were both stationed at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport where he was a Craftmaster on an 120-foot Oceangoing Torpedo Retriever. Several members of his Crew drove clear across the State at their own expense to act as Pallbearers at his Funeral! I was with him at the Chiefs Club at the Subase one evening with our dates, when he suffered a massive heart attack. I drove to the ER where he was DOA, and made the initial notifications to his Girlfriend and our Command. Taking him home was one of the most important, proudest and rewarding things Ive ever done in my life!
