Thoughts for readers and authors on social media - TopicsExpress

Thoughts for readers and authors on social media interaction: Ive never (that I can remember) done giveaways of any kind... Books. Teasers. Reveals. Whatever. In exchange for FB likes or twitter followers. Which is fine. I kind of dragged myself onto FB reluctantly, because I prefer twitter, but Ive gotten addicted to how fun and easy it is to interact with readers on a page, so dont worry. I wont be leaving. Probably as a result of that, my numbers for both of those arent as impressive as a lot of other authors. I dont auto follow. I dont like exchange for FB pages. (Which means, if you see me liking something, I really, genuinely do.) The fact that I have over 4K readers on this page surprised me just now when I checked. (Ha!) New writers, especially, remember this: Its not about numbers. Its about interaction. See, I may have lower numbers, but none of those readers followed or liked just because they wanted a book or to win a giveaway. (Unless that was part of a blog contest, which is possible.) But because of that, I have awesome interaction! The majority of those readers sought me out on FB or twitter. They followed. They liked. They read whats going on and write me or tweet me or whatever. And theyre awesomely (and often hilariously) engaged. And thats way more valuable than numbers on a screen. Waaaay more valuable. So, just remember that. This is not me shading those authors who DO hold contests or auto follow or whatever. This is just me reminding people that this thing, social media, is supposed to be fun. And if youre not pressuring yourself to get more likes than the next guy, it IS fun. So dont worry if you dont have the biggest numbers, just think about engaging readers. All that other stuff follows.
