Thoughts on Leadership 170 Why Patience Matters In Leadership VII - It enhances listening The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them. - Ralph Nichols I think listening is one hardest disciplines to cultivate for most leaders. Perhaps its because we often have so much to say or to have done or were so focused on the vision that anything else would be branded a distraction. Its easier to listen to suggestions from making-sense team members, but the truth is that everyone might not be making so much sense. I think this second category is a big patience test for leaders, but you can never really tell where your big idea will emerge from. Im currently leading a virtual content development team on a social media campaign for an event, and weve been blessed with a lot of making-sense sort of people. However, the most available and perhaps passionate team member doesnt seem to have enough experience yet to make much sense and I can tell you its been a tough patience test lending him my attention and encouraging him severally to come up with more relevant stuff, and hes improving gradually. I think there are only a few leadership skills that are as importance as listening. It encourages people to participate in a team and boosts their confidence to grow and contribute more. Im beginning to think Ill do a series on listening, but until then I believe weve been reminded that it takes patience to really listen. @Okwynweze #ThoughtsOnLeadership BB PIN: 312862A4 Bon weekend!
