Time for a #restaurantweek rant. As the event has become more and more successful, its been getting worse and worse for the consumers. Prices have gone up, quality has gone down. When it started, when it was smaller and success was up in the air, it seemed most restaurants went out of their way to showcase what theyve got by offering original (ie not on the regular menu) food at unbeatable prices. Some still do, such as Tranquil, which offers an all-original RW menu at $25 (on a normal day, its not easy to get out of Tranquil at less than $25). Now that the success of RW is guaranteed, some restaurants are mailing it in. The following appear to basically be offering their regular menu during restaurant week: Burger Mondays, Thai Time, Social on State, Cafe West 46, The Night Kitchen, Cortese, Whole in the Wall, House of Reardon and I think Taste of Europe, if their past performance is any indication. RW gives these guys more advertising this week than they probably get the rest of the year combined and they cant be bothered to put something together for the event? Why bother? Oh, its because all the free advertising gets asses in seats and lines their pockets. Burger Mondays needs to especially be called to task. They are essentially offering their regular menu at higher prices. If you get the most expensive app ($4 for chili), most expensive burger ($14 tuna), and dessert ($4), its $22 (RW price $20). If you get the least expensive items ($3 soup), $9 classic burger, and dessert ($4), it comes to $16 but theyll gladly charge you the RW price of $20 I suppose. The good news is, the following places are willing to put in some effort and are apparently offering completely original RW menus: Tranquil, the Loft at 99, Water Street Brewing Co, River Bistro, Galaxy Brewing, Gallaghers, and I think Remliks and South Side Yannis (hard to tell 100%). And the best values are going to be at the higher end places that you normally cant get out of for $25 (Tranquil, Remliks, Loft, Number 5). Hopefully #bingspot or whoever is running this culls the herd a little bit and lets the restaurants know that if youre unwilling to put in any effort, you wont be asked back for RW. #bingfood
