The malnourished cow which had the slenderness and poise of runway models had completed its journey from the reknown Ama Hausa in Owerri, to Mrs Ifeyinwas expansive frying pans and finally down the bellies of numerous village gluttons and drunks. The canopies had all been packed and empty cans of assorted beer and soft drinks all swept up. The sun was fierce, its rays sneaked through the window like the fingers of some god of flame, evaporating the fog of gloom that initialy beclouded the compound. Chisom, Adoros second son was lying peacefully inside Egbedamas room which now served as a makeshift visitors room, with all her numerous antiquities and ancient belongings now safely packed in the dark store. The room now wore a fresh look and reeked of new life. The rest of the family were in the living room watching the ever boring litany of programmes on Orient TV, When Chisom stormed into the living room like an evil spirit, sweating profusely, with fear emborsed boldly on his forehead. owu gini? She was the familys most prefered aunt because there was never a dull moment with her,her un ending gists about famous politician Senator Athur Nzeribe and his political escapades, her irritation for the marine spirit worship by Oguta people, the Charley Boy-Gov. Rochas saga at the burial of famous late Justice Oputa, and the intriguing rides in speed boats and antiquated pontoons on the Oguta blue lake. Her stories were always scintilating, Also her jokes too, even though they werent funny, she laughed loudly at them to an extent that we had to pretentiously join her. ***** ***** ***** It was about 1.45 am, The music of chirping insects and occassional screeches of scarvenging bats floated through the cold night. Mrs Ifeyinwa was still awake with her trademark rendetion of praise and worship songs when she was suddenly startled by what sounded like a hot slap, followed an exclamation ewwwww. Instinctively, she stood up swiftly, her husband Adoro was fast asleep, snoring aloud like a faulty motor bike exhaust pipe. She sneaked into Chisoms room, he was fast asleep, checked the girls room and both Chizoba and Ugonna were asleep too. Finally, she rushed to the visitors room which was fomerly the late Egbedamas room, and behold aunty Marymag lay completely uconcious, submerged in a lake of sweat, her eyes wide open and completely white like the flesh of new yam. She trembled like patients with parkinson and epilepsy diseases did and had Urinated all over the bed unconciously. Jeeeeesus!Mrs Ifeyinwa shouted, shook Marymag as vigorous as he could, yet she didnt respond. Her husband and others joined her, because her yells had woken them up, they all burst into a session of tensed prayer, yet Mary Mag was stil unconcious. Mrs Ifeyinwa ran to her room to get her bottle of water, and no sooner had she sprinkled some of it on Marymag, than she regained herself. What are you people doing here Marymag asked with a feeble voice,it dawned on everyone that she had been oblivious of all that had happened. The next morning Every one flashed back at Chisoms story, and all concluded that something was definitely Spiritually wrong with that room. The reverend father was summoned and prayers were conducted, the Elders also suggested that an amount of gun powder was to be burnt in the room so as to invoke the gods to put this mysterious spirit at rest completely. Whose ghost it was, no one could decipher at that moment but for sure, it had to be haulted. Quick and Fast! ***** ***** *****
