Title/ 내가 여기 있나이다 (Here I Am!) Texts/ 출(Exodus) 3:1-15/ 롬(Romans) 12:9-21 며칠 전 저는 흥미로운 체험을 한 가지를 했습니다. 부산에서 목회하고 계신 선배 목사님의 지목을 받아서, 요즘 전세계적으로 유행하고 있는 “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge”라는 것을 하게 되었던 것입니다. 다른 사람에게 지목을 받게 되면, 24시간 이내에 얼음물을 뒤집어 쓰거나 ALS 재단에 $100을 기부하는 캠페인인데요, 이것은 흔히 ‘루게릭병’으로 불리는 ‘Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)’ 희귀병 환자들의 고통을 잠시나마 대신 체험해 보고, 연구재단에 기부를 하게끔 흥미로운 방식으로 고안된 것입니다. 그리고 이 챌린지를 받아 들인 사람은 다른 세 명을 지명해서 동참을 유도합니다. 쓸 데 없이 물을 낭비한다는 비판이 없는 것은 아니지만, 이 캠페인이 전세계적으로 유행을 하면서 엄청난 연구비용을 모금할 수 있었다고 하니 나쁘게만은 볼 필요가 없지 않을까 싶네요. 제가 어떤 식으로 동참했는지는 잠시 후에 보여 드리도록 하겠습니다. The other day, I had a quite interesting experience myself. After being nominated by a pastor in Korea, I participated in so-called “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” which recently became popular around the globe. It is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someones head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or commonly known as “Lou Gehrigs disease,” and encourage donations to research. Once you’re nominated by someone to join the campaign, you’re encouraged to do it within 24 hours, and to nominate three other people to join it as well. Although there’s a criticism saying that it’s only a waste of water, I believe it still worth doing because of the incredible amount of money donated by the participants worldwide. Would you be interested in watching how I joined the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?” (https://youtube/watch?v=1d9xsesWQ3g) 잘 보셨습니까? 방금 보신대로, 한국에 계신 박대열 목사님이 저를 지목하셔서 제가 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge에 동참하게 되었고, 저는 한국, 호주 및 남아공에서 살고 있는 저의 지인을 지명함으로써 그들에게 이 Challenge를 받아 들이게끔 초대했습니다. 그리고 그 세 사람은 (거부하지 않고 동참을 한다면) 각각 세 사람을 지명하는 방법을 통해서 이 일에 동참하도록 권유할 것입니다. 물론 이 모든 일에 있어 어떠한 법적 구속력이나 강제성은 없습니다. 얼음물을 뒤집어 쓰는 것이나 돈 $100 기부하는 일에 동참하기 싫으면 하지 않으면 되는 것이고, 아니면 자기는 하되 세 사람 지명하는 일을 원치 않으면 그것 역시도 안하면 되는 것입니다. 선택은 철저히 개인의 자유입니다. 하지만, 우리는 이것을 통해 이 세상의 많은 일들은 물론이고 이 일 속에서도 중요한 신앙적인 (또는 성경적인) 원칙을 한 가지 발견하게 되는데, 그것은 다름 아닌 “부르심과 응답” 또는 “초대와 수락”의 원리라는 것입니다. I hope you enjoyed the video. As you just watched, I could take part in this campaign with a nomination made by Rev. Park in Korea, and I also invited three different friends of mine, who are living in Korea, in Australia and in South Africa, to take this unique and meaningful challenge. Hopefully, those three might be able to invite three more people respectively to do the same thing. However there’s no legal binding force in any of this campaign. If you don’t want to take an icy shower or don’t want to donate $100, you don’t need to. And if you don’t want to nominate anyone, while you’d choose the ice bucket or the donation, you can simply stop doing that. Everything is totally up to your decision. We, however, are able to find an important biblical principle, which is called “calling and response” or “invitation and acceptance.” 성경이 묘사하는 하나님은 인격적인 신으로서, 사람을 찾고 부르셔서 자신을 드러내시고, 복을 주시고, 책임을 맡기시는 분이십니다. 특별히 신앙적으로 큰 일을 감당해야 할 위대한 지도자들을 세우실 때 하나님께서 가장 먼저 하셨던 일은 그들의 이름을 부르시는 것이었습니다. 창세기 22:1절에서 하나님은 아브라함을 부르셨는데, 아브라함이 “내가 여기 있나이다”하고 대답했고, 사무엘상 6:8에서 어린 사무엘을 부르셨을 때에도 사무엘 역시 “내가 여기 있나이다”하고 응답했습니다. 오늘 말씀의 주인공, 장차 이스라엘 백성들을 압제의 땅 이집트에서 이끌어 낼 민족의 지도자 모세 역시도 하나님께서 “모세야, 모세야”하고 부르셨을 때 “내가 여기 있나이다”라고 겸손하게 대답했던 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님의 부르심이 있는 곳에 감사가 있고, 부르심이 있는 곳에 은혜가 있고, 부르심이 있는 곳에 축복이 있는 것입니다. The God that the Bible describes is a personal God, and He looks for people, calls them, reveals Himself to them, bless them and assign special missions to them. The very first thing when God appointed the great leaders in the Bible was to call their names. When God called Abraham in Genesis 22:1, he answered Him by saying “Here I am.” Also in the 1 Samuel 6:8, the young Samuel answered Him just like that: “Here I am!” And in today’s passage, Moses, who later became the great leader of Israel, humbly responded to God’s calling: “Here I am!” Where there’s a calling of God, there is thanksgiving. Where there’s a calling of God, there is grace. Where there’s a calling of God, there is blessing! 하나님께서 모세에게 특별한 사명을 맡기려고 불러 내셨을 때, 모세는 다른 날처럼 미디안 광야에서 장인인 이드로의 양떼를 돌보는 일을 하고 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 호렙산 떨기나무에서 모세의 이름을 불러 주시고 만나 주심으로 인해, 그 평범한 날은 일평생 잊을 수 없는 가장 특별한 날이 되었습니다. 모세 한 사람에게는 물론이고, 이스라엘 백성 전체에게 말입니다. 모세가 하나님을 경험했던 그 산은, 양떼에게 풀을 먹이기 위해 그 전에도 수없이 다녔을 수도 있는 곳이었겠지만, 하나님은 바로 그곳이 거룩한 땅이므로 발에 신고 있던 신을 벗으라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님이 우리의 이름을 부르시면, 우리의 평범한 하루는 일평생 가장 특별한 순간이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님이 우리의 이름을 부르시면, 우리가 살고 있는 삶의 터전은 그곳이 학교이든, 집이든, 교회이든 상관없이 세상에서 가장 거룩한 땅이 될 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님이 우리의 이름을 불러 주시면, 수많은 세상 사람들 속에 파묻혀 잊혀지고 사라졌던 우리들의 존재가 아주 아주 특별한 하나님의 종으로 새롭게 태어날 수가 있는 것입니다. What was this man doing when God called him out for a very special mission? Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law in the Desert of Midian as usual. Nevertheless, when God called his name in the burning bush of Mount Horeb, that ordinary day turned into the most special day not only to Moses, but also to the whole people of Israel. The mountain slope where he encountered with God could be one of the pasturing spots he used to go, but it now became the most holy place where God’s presence was vividly revealed that He asked Moses to take off his sandals. Don’t you think any of your ordinary days can be the most extraordinary day, when God calls your name for a reason? No matter where you are, whether in your school, in your house, or in your church, your place can turn into the most holy ground in the world, when God calls you! And most of all, our forgotten, abandoned and neglected beings can change into the glorious form of stewards of God, as long as God calls us to His presence! 우리보다 앞서 이 세상에 왔다 간 우리들의 위대한 신앙적 선조들은 자신을 쓰시겠다고 부르시는 하나님의 부르심에 “주여 내가 있나이다”하고 응답했습니다. 이것은 바로 “네, 주인님. 제가 여기 서서 듣고 있으니, 무엇이든 말씀하시기만 하면 기쁘게 순종하겠습니다”라는 의미인 것입니다. 물론 하나님의 부르심에 응답하지 않을 자유도 우리에겐 있습니다. 하나님은 인격적인 분이시라 절대로 우리 의견을 무시하고 억지로 일을 맡기는 분은 아니기 때문입니다. 그러나 여러분, 하나님의 부르심에 “내가 여기 있나이다”하고 반응하고, 그 challenge를 받아 들인 사람들은 하나같이 커다란 축복을 받았음을 기억하시기 바랍니다. 다른 사람에게 Ice Bucket Challenge 지명을 받았을 때, 가장 먼저 할 일은 “나는 그 일을 하기로 결정했습니다”하고 수락하는 일입니다. 그것을 받아 들인 후에는 차디찬 얼음물 세례를 받거나, 경제적인 손실이 뒤따르지만, 그럴만한 가치가 있으니 행하는 것입니다. Our great ancestors of faith rightly responded to God who wanted to use them by saying, “Here I am, Lord!” That means “Yes, Master, Your servant is listening. I’ll gladly serve You in whatever You want me to do.” Of course, we do have freedom not to respond to His calling. He never forces us to take any responsibility, because He is a personal and good God. My friends, however, I hope you remember that every single person who took God’s challenges have been so much blessed in their lives. The first step you have to do in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” is to verbally accept it, and then you are asked to baptise yourself into the ice water or to donate 100 bucks or so. You accept the offer for a physical inconvenience or an economic loss, but you still do it, because it still worth doing and because there is a meaning! 하나님의 부르심을 받아 들이는 것도 마찬가지가 아닐까 생각합니다. 하나님의 부르심에 “주님, 제가 여기 있습니다”하고 긍정적으로 반응했다고 해서, 반드시 긍정적인 일만 생기지는 않는다는 사실을 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 모세의 삶이 얼마나 고됐는지 잘 아시지 않습니까? 그래도 하나님의 일엔 가치가 있고, 보람이 있고, 기쁨이 있기 때문에 부르심에 응답하는 것 아니겠습니까? 저는 앞으로 남은 생애를 그렇게 살려고 결단합니다. 하나님만 함께 하신다면, 무엇이든 할 것입니다. 어디든 갈 것입니다. 하나님이 가라시는 곳에 가고, 하라시는 일을 하고, 만나라시는 사람들을 만나고, 전하라 하시는 것을 전하는 것이 저의 사명이라 믿기 때문입니다. 여러분도 함께 동참하시지 않겠습니까? 그렇다면, 세상의 잃어버린 영혼을 사랑하셔서여러분의 이름을 부르시는 하나님의 음성을 외면치 마시고 오늘 즉각적으로 응답하시기 바랍니다. “주여, 내가 여기 있나이다. 나를 보내소서!”하고 말입니다. 아멘. I believe that accepting God’s calling is not too different from this. We better note that the positive response of “Here I am, Lord!” does not necessarily guarantee the positive results. We already know how difficult Moses’ life was after the calling on the Mount Horeb, don’t we? Nevertheless, we also know that we have to rightly respond to God’s calling, because there’s a priceless value, a great meaning and a never-ending joy in it! I also have resolved to live like that. I’ll do everything as long as God is with me. I’ll go anywhere if God leads me. Why? Because I confidently believe that it is my calling to go wherever He wants me to go, it is my calling to do whatever He wants me to do, and it is my calling to speak whatever He wants me to speak.
