The groups first tour had ended less than four months earlier. 1964 1970s President Richard Nixon encourages broadcasters to ban Rock lyrics with drug references. 1970 Santana’s sophomore album, “Abraxas,” begins a six week run at #1 in the U.S. 1970 Keith Richards gets fined (once again) and a slap on the wrist (a conditional discharge) after being convicted on four drug charges and three firearm offenses resulting from a June 26th police raid of his home. 1973 John Lennon sues the U.S. government for wiretapping his phone. Lennon’s anti-Vietnam War activities led the feds to conduct a surveillance program. 1973 KISS unfurls “Alive II” (the follow-up to ‘75’s “Alive!”). The double platinum album is originally distributed with KISS rub-off tattoos and an eight page booklet. 1977 Silverchair’s drummer, Ben Gillies, enters the world. 1979 1980s Fantasy Records, Creedence Clearwater Revivals label, and former CCR leader John Fogerty begin totally ridiculous court proceedings to determine whether Fogerty ripped off his own “Run Through The Jungle” to create “Old Man Down The Road.” Fantasy, who owns CCR`s song publishing, brought the suit. Fogerty wins but at a cost. 1988 1990s Smashing Pumpkins The double album “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness is released. The Smashing Pumpkins set contains Bullet With Butterfly Wings, which becomes the bands first Top 40 U.S. hit, peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. 1995 2000s Selling over one-million copies in the first week of its release, Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate St*rfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water” is the #1 album in the U.S. 2000 Linkin Park issues their debut album, Hybrid Theory. Over the next dozen years, the album moves over 10 million copies in the U.S., enough to earn the group a diamond certification. 2012 Songs by Def Leppard, Queens Of The Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold, Dio, the Scorpions and Iron Maiden are heard on the soundtrack of the snowboarding-themed video game SSX On Tour. 2005 The show must go on! Sao Paulos mayor agrees to allow Pearl Jam to perform December 2nd-3rd in the Brazilian citys Pacaembu stadium. Mayor Jose Serra had suspended shows after complaints from nearby wealthy residents about noise and the potential mess. Hey, Rock concerts are rarely sedate and tidy. Cobains music earned $50 million over the previous year. During that time, the singers widow, Courtney Love, sold 25 percent of her stake in Nirvanas publishing rights. One licensing agreement allows Nirvana songs to be used on CSI: Miami. 2006 My Chemical Romance unfurl “The Black Parade.” The album almost didn’t get completed because singer Gerard Way was suffering from crippling depression. I went through a crisis. I was examining every awful thing about myself, says the singer. I was living inside the record. It was a dark time. 2006 Billy Idol, Velvet Revolvers Duff McKagan and Alice In Chains Mike Inez, appear on the tribute album Butchering The Beatles. When the hour-long show is over theres a screening of Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at Monterey DVD. 2007 A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE is broadcast with taped performances by Kid Rock, Fall Out Boy, Angels & Airwaves and Saving Abel. The program calls attention to the heroism and struggles of young veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 2008 It’s announced that Kid Rock has founded a scholarship for Detroit residents studying music business or music technology at Wayne State University. I truly believe that a major part of Detroits healing and moving forward will come through education, says Rock. 2008 One-time Grateful Dead keyboardist Merl Saunders dies in San Francisco of complications from a stroke he suffered in ‘02. Saunders performed on the groups Europe 72 live set, but was known primarily for his side project collaborations with Dead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia. 2008 Coldplays Chris Martin, Wolfmother, No Doubt and Gavin Rossdale (Bush) perform at Neil Youngs 23rd annual Bridge School Benefit concerts at Shoreline Amphitheatre near San Jose, CA.
