Today is the birthday of cartoon composer, CARL STALLING (1891-1972)!! Stalling was born in Lexington, Missouri and in his early 20s he was conducting an orchestra and improvising on the organ at the Isis Theatre in Kansas City, MO. It was in KC that he met Walt Disney. He composed the music for Disneys early cartoons Plane Crazy and Gallopin Gaucho. He also voiced Mickey Mouses first words, which were heard in The Karnival Kid (1929). But Stalling is best known for his work on Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoons. He introduced generations of kids to classical music through his extensive quotes from everyone from Rossini to Grieg. Heres the 1934 Ub Iwerks cartoon, Jack Frost, for which Stalling wrote the score. Its appropriate, considering the weather thats headed for Kansas City this week.
