Today’s Diane Rehm show featured a robust discussion on violent extremism in Europe, in light of last week’s attacks in Paris. One of the salient points of discussion was on the risk factors of radicalization and whether extremist beliefs or socio-economic and political grievances were pushing disaffected youth towards violence. thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2015-01-12/terror_in_france_and_the_global_response At WORDE, we’ve recognized that there is no “one-size-fits-all” theory of radicalization. We’ve utilized a cluster model which identifies major risk factors associated with violent extremism, such as sociological conditions (e.g. social alienation, acculturation difficulties), psychological factors (e.g. post-traumatic stresses, mental illnesses), economic factors (e.g. unemployment, relative deprivation), political grievances (e.g. limited civil engagement opportunities), and ideological factors (e.g. the justification of violence to address grievances). Our research indicates that failure to address these risk factors may increase the risk of radicalization and other acculturation-related stress conditions. To address this issue in the greater Washington DC region, WORDE established Crossroads in 2013, a social services agency based at our International Cultural Center that reduces risk factors of violent extremism for vulnerable individuals and families.
