Tonight, in 1859: John Brown and twenty-one raiders attacked Harpers Ferry (still part of Virginia) and captured the United States Arsenal there in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. The war began not at Sumter, wrote future Confederate cavalry officer Turner Ashby, but at Harpers Ferry.
