Top 100 Albums of 2014: #93 Caribou, Our Love Dan Snaith didn’t expect the swirling, psychedelic electronics of his last album, Swim (2010) to receive such a warm reception from clubland. But DJs quickly picked up on the music’s liquid ability to lift the limbs and the teetotal Canadian mathematician found himself invited to do shows in clubs and the percentage of women in his audience swelled dramatically. He made this latest emotionally and intellectually supple album specifically for that dance community. He told Mixmag that the love in the title isn’t that “simplified, super euphoric, one-dimensional take on love that we’re fed all the time in popular culture,” but about connections that are “complicated and difficult, whether it be your relationship with your partner or with your child, or your parents, or your friends. It’s not just some kind of ’ping!’” That said, some tracks, like Can’t Do Without You just build gently and uncomplicatedly towards euphoria. There’s a softness to intricate beats that allows you to fall gently into their embrace. He recorded his vocals up close to the microphone and that tenderness transfers to the ear drum. R&B inflections and analogue samples (including a delicate flute on Mars) add musical curves to Snaith’s politely calibrated blend of hands-up and chill-out.
