Wehrung International Student Humanitarian Award for International Students The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Humanitarian Award (ISHA) recognizes outstanding international students from impoverished or war-torn areas, who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would be unable to pursue post-secondary education without financial assistance. The value of awards is commensurate with demonstrated financial need, and sufficient to cover tuition costs for the relevant program of study, and living expenses. An ISHA award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the recipient achieves satisfactory academic standing in their Faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian Study Permit (visa). All candidates must be nominated for an ISHA award. To be eligible, nominees must be 1. International students entering university directly from secondary school; 2. Eligible to study in Canada on a Canadian study permit; 3. Demonstrate superior academic achievement (A average or equivalent standing) as well as other admission requirements. University of Bern Masters Grants for International Students The University of Bern Masters Grants provides an opportunity for international students to pursue a Master’s programme beginning in autumn 2015/2016 All Master’s Programme offered at University of Bern with the exception of Biomedical Science. Scholarship value/inclusions: The grant consists of a monthly stipend of CHF 1,600.00, exemption from one-off application fee, and exemption from tuition fees. Eligibility: • Permanent domicile outside of Switzerland at the time of applying • Bachelor degree from a non-Swiss university outside Switzerland • The discipline of the completed Bachelor studies and of the intended Master studies must be same • Predicted completion of the Bachelor studies at the latest by 30 July 2015 • The Bachelor degree conferred in the last five (5) years. UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award The International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations. Scholarship value/inclusions: International Leader of Tomorrow Award-winners receive an award-level commensurate with their financial need as determined by the costs of their tuition, fees and living costs, minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs. JAPANESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS Afghan students wishing to apply for a scholarship should be recommended by a Japanese embassy or consulate general (Embassy Recommendation) Foreign students can enroll in one of five types of institutions of higher learning: universities (undergraduate courses), graduate schools, junior colleges, special training colleges (post-secondary courses) and colleges of technology. Qualification (1) Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of the country to which the scholarships are offered. (2) Age: Applicants must be at least seventeen years and less than twenty two years of age. (3) Academic Background: Applicants must have either completed a twelve year regular course of school education or have graduated from a school equivalent to the senior high school in Japan. (4) Japanese Language: Applicants must be willing to study the Japanese language and to receive university education in the Japanese language. (5) Health: Applicants must have no infectious diseases. In view of expected psychological burden due to cultural and environmental changes, mental as well as physical health is an essential prerequisite. Scholarships (1) Allowance: 123,000 yen (in FY 2013) per month will be given to each grantee during the term of his/her scholarship, with the understanding that the scholarship will be suspended in the case in which a grantee is absent from the university for long periods. (2) Transportation: a. Transportation to Japan: The grantee will be supplied, according to his/her itinerary with a tourist class air ticket from the international airport nearest to his/her home address to the New Tokyo International Airport or an international airport designated by the scholarship. b. Transportation from Japan: The grantee who returns to his/her home country within the fixed period after the expiration of the scholarship will be supplied, upon application, with a tourist class air ticket from the New Tokyo International Airport (3) Arrival Allowance: The sum of 25,000 yen 15900 AFN or $311 will be given to the grantee on arrival. (4) Field Study Allowance: An allowance (within the framework of budget) will be given to the grantee in the final year of the course for use in his/her field work in Japan (5) School Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation and tuition at universities will be exempted. (6) Accommodations: a. During the first year after arrival in Japan, the grantees will be offered housing at the residence hall of the preparatory institution or in other accommodations provided by the program authorities. b. Accommodation for the grantees who have completed the preliminary course will be as follows: (a) The Foreign Student Houses, operated by the Association of international Education, Japan The grantees enrolled at universities in Tokyo or Osaka District may reside, if they so desire, at one of the Foreign Student Houses operated by the Association of International Education, Japan. However, these dormitories may not be able to accommodate all the students who have applied for housing. (b) Residence halls for foreign students established by national universities. At present about 80 national universities have residence halls for foreign students. The grantees enrolled at universities where such facilities are available may reside, if they so desire, at these residence halls according to certain conditions. However, some of these facilities may not be able to accommodate all the students who have applied for housing. (c) Private boarding houses or apartments. Those who are not able to find accommodations in the above facilities will have to live in a dormitory of the university or in private boarding houses or apartments introduced by the university Selection The Japanese diplomatic missions abroad will, in cooperation with the foreign governments concerned, select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of an interview and academic examination and a review of the submitted documents. INDIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) offers about 2325 scholarships annually. They are available to candidates who want to pursue their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees from Afghanistan and other countries. General Cultural Scholarship Scheme The General Cultural Scholarship Scheme (GCSS) is one of the most important and popular schemes of the ICCR for foreign students. Scholarships are awarded under this scheme annually to international students belonging to certain Asian, African and Latin American countries for the undergraduate, postgraduate degrees and for pursuing research at Indian universities. However, scholarships for medical studies for MBBS, BDS or for medical research leading to a Ph.D. degree are not offered under the GCSS scheme. Pakistani Scholarships Educational Programmes Provides Afghan students fully funded scholarships for higher education (graduate and post graduate studies) covering academic expense, boarding and lodging, travelling to and from Afghanistan and other associated expenses. All undergraduate programs other than Medical Sciences, Islamic Studies and Turkish Language and Literature are offered in this scholarship program. (b) Anatolia Undergraduate Scholarship This program is for citizens of Turkish Republic of North Cypress and non-Turkish citizens who have completed their secondary education in Turkey. All undergraduate programs other than Medical Sciences, Islamic Studies and Turkish Language and Literature are offered in this scholarship program. (c) Ibni Sina Medical Sciences Scholarship This program includes the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutics, nursing and veterinary medicine. This program provides scholarships for Associate, Undergraduate, Masters and PhD degree and is available for non-Turkish nationals from all countries. AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIPS (a) The Foundation for Afghanistan Scholarships are available for pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field at a university located in the United States. Eligibility: All college-eligible Afghan students, especially females, are encouraged to apply. We are especially looking for students with financial need who also demonstrate a determination to make a meaningful contribution to Afghanistan upon completion of their education. Through this scholarship program, the Foundation hopes to contribute towards improving human capacity and facilitating the development of Afghanistan. Applications without international TOEFL or IELTS or SAT scores are not be eligible. Diplomas from Afghan English courses are not substitutes for international TOEFL/IELTS/SAT scores. Students who have studied in “Englishmedium” schools in Afghanistan or its neighborhood are still required to submit their TOEFL/IELTS results. There is no “passing score” or “minimum score to be accepted.” Everyone is encouraged to apply. Covered Costs: The Foundation for Afghanistan and its partner colleges will cover all fees, health insurance, meals and housing for the duration of study. (c) GAWHAR SHAD UNIVERSITY AFGHANISTAN Gawhar Shad University was founded in 2003 by the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) in response to the lack of post-secondary education opportunities for Afghan women. AIL is an Afghan, women run, nongovernmental organization (NGO) which was founded in 1995 by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi to help address the crisis of poor access to education and health services for Afghan people especially women and children. AIL’s internationally recognized work plays a major role by creating or reconstructing education and health systems capable of reaching the women, children and men of Afghanistan--whether in refugee camps or in their homeland. AIL’s visionary programs have had a major impact and are now being replicated by the Afghan government and other NGOs in the region. Three curriculum tracks are offered: • College of Nursing/Health Education • College of Math and Computer Science • College of Education College of Nursing/Health Education The Nursing/Health Education program provides students with a broad knowledge-base and skill set in nursing, health education, vaccination, midwifery, and disease prevention. This 18-month intensive course requires students to complete a practical as well as classroom work and provides instruction on over 100 medical topics. (D) College of Math and Computer Science The College of Math and Computer Science course subjects include Computer, Math, Dari, Psychology, English, and Islamiat. In addition there is a 3 year degree in computer science offered and a 4 year one in business administration. (E) College of Education In the College of Education, teachers study to be teacher trainers and Master Teacher Trainers. They learn student centered, interactive methods of teaching and how to train other teachers to use these methods. They also learn to develop new curriculum and apply interactive teaching methods in new settings and new ways. The only private university in Afghanistan that charges the lowest fees to enable talented students from lower socio-economic background to pursue their higher education. Gawharshad offers even lower fees for women and is the only private university in the country that has the highest female enrolment. Presently, more than 40% of our students are female. The Women Empowerment Center is an active body dedicated to highlighting and promoting women’s rights in the country. Gawharshad provide various kinds of sponsorship programs for women, particularly those who are disadvantaged, orphaned or disabled. They offer several scholarships for civil servants-in service. Gawharshad emphasizes leadership to enable students to reach their full potentials and become the future leaders of the country. Additional need-based trainings in English Language, Computer Courses and Internet is provided. All lecturers are experienced instructors who have obtained their Masters or Doctorates from the US, Europe, South and Central Asian Countries. Afghan Students Students in Afghanistan are selected solely on the basis of merit, without regard to their families’ financial means, social status, or background Ethnicity, religion, and political affiliation are not considered as part of the application process. Students do not indicate any of these characteristics anywhere in their application. Financial support is available on the basis of need, which will cover tuition and room and board. Travel costs, health insurance, college deposits, personal spending money, and passport /visa costs are the responsibility of individual students and their families. In exceptional cases, the College may have limited funds to support some of these expenses. While the National Committee will make nominations to individual Colleges, the final offer of admission (and associated funding) is the decision of the College alone. CRITERIA FOR APPLYING In order to apply for the UWC process in Afghanistan, applicants must be: • A citizen of Afghanistan • Living in Afghanistan, or one of Afghanistan’s immediate neighbours (Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan or China) • Between the ages of 16 and 18 • If you have been the victim of a landmine or cluster ammunition injury, please contact the National Committee immediately, as there may be an additional opportunity for you. • Any exceptions to the three criteria above (e.g., for children of Afghan diplomats living abroad, or students on scholarships abroad) should be discussed with the UWC National Committee in Afghanistan in advance of applying, to ensure the application can be considered. UWC is very strict regarding applications and all applications must be the student’s work alone. Any indication of outside assistance with the application – at any stage of the process – is grounds for immediate disqualification. Applications must be completed in English, by hand (not typed), and in blue or black ink. Applications will only be accepted by e-mail (please see below for specific instructions, including timing, of when you can submit your application). Applications without a clear e-mail address and/or telephone number to contact the applicant will be rejected. Students nominated by the National Committee, you will be responsible for obtaining all travel documents (passport, visa, etc.) Applicants who do not receive a visa may have their offer to the UWC revoked. PARENTAL CONSENT The UWC scholarship is for a two-year residential programme (with separate rooms for male and female students); parental consent is required for applications to be considered.
