US GOVERNMENT PLEADGES SUPPORT TO LNP (Monrovia, Liberia April 25, 2014) The United States Government through its Embassy near Monrovia has reaffirmed its readiness and commitment in assisting the Liberian Government build the capacity of the Liberia National Police, but stressed the need for improve police conduct. Ambassador Deborah Malac said good police conduct towards citizens is significant in a democratic environment such as Liberia, and lauded the police administration for stringent measures taken against officers who have contravened the Police Duty manual. A Police press release quotes Ambassador Malac as saying that the US Government renewed commitment to the police is predicated on the level of professionalism the LNP has exhibited in the execution of its statutory mediate, especially the improved provision of security for the people of Liberia. In a meeting with senior police officers of the Liberia National Police, the US Ambassador promised her government willingness to provide spare parts for broken down police vehicles to have them back in full police operations. She stressed that with the potential drawdown of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, it was significant for the police force to be fully equipped to meet the security needs of the Liberian people in the absence of UNMIL. She said her government is impressed with the improvement made in police officers conduct, and requested the Police leadership to focus on the work of Professional Standards Division to have it win public confidence. Amb. Malac assured the LNP that the US Government support to the ERU and PSU will include the Professional Standards Division. In respond Police Director Col. Clarence Massaquoi narrated the logistical difficulties being experienced by the LNP in fulfilling its obligations to the people of Liberia. He told the US Envoy that despite difficulties facing the police force it will remain committed in fighting crime for the Liberian society. Commenting on the conduct of police officers, the LNP boss assured Ambassador Malac of his administration commitment in addressing misconduct in the police. He informed the US Envoy of measures his administration has taken to curb misdoing in the police, by suspending, dismissing, and forwarding for prosecution officers that have committed transgression. He lauded the US Government for the continuous support being rendered to the police in the wake of major logistical challenge. SIGNED_________
