Understanding the Academic challenge facing America. Part 1; For the last 40 years or so the U.S. has been throwing more and more money at education. More than any three other countries on earth combined. And what have we gotten for it? Internationally, we are falling way behind academically. Yesterdays report showed that countries such as Laos, Viet Nam and yes even North Korea have literally left us in their dust. Liberals think we need to throw more money at the problem, never mind that they dont understand what the problem is. Please read and see how I understand it. Remember its all about money NOT education. About six years ago I had the displeasure of sitting in on my God daughters older brothers middle school (A.J.Rooney M.S.)history class while her father attended her and her little brothers classes at Morrow Elem. From the moment I walked into the school I was appalled at the behavior of both students and teachers alike. Young healthy 20 something teachers (so I assumed) dressed down as though the just came from digging ditches. with 2-way radios standing post laughing as students chased each other in all directions. One teacher (?) stood there as two students ran circles around him tearing his shirt as they used him as a center pole. He kept smiling while speaking in a soft condescending voice pleading to them to get to class. In class the subject went from the Roman Empire to the Byzantine Empire. The teacher kicked back with feet up on the desk and book in lap. (he had a rough night and a hangover for sure. Students were called on at random to read one paragraph from the text book. Now its bad enough that the students had a hard time pronouncing any word with more than 6 letters, but when one student stumbled across the word Byzantium and couldnt come up with one closely phonetic sound the teacher decided to move things along with bizton. wow his understanding of phonetics were much better than that of the student. During this 45 minute class a tall (around 6) skinny black kid with his shirt completely open, no tee underneath, the dirtiest, nappiest Afro ever with a pick sticking out of the top and he was either high or just woke up after a long night, kept wondering in and out of the classroom. Finally with 5 minutes left in the class our esteemed teacher asked him what he was doing. Lukkin for a Mother Fuggin pencil was his reply. Can somebody please give Mr. blah blah a Fuggin pencil Right way to handle that one teach! Someone threw him a pencil and he wondered back into the hall. The kid who was reading at the time never did get to finish his paragraph. Bell rings and the kids knock over desks to get out. Now would you call that a productive 45 minute class? This is just an experience to start off a long conversation about education budget cuts. And this narrative is not meant to be seen as my reason for supporting cuts.
