Use Hospitality One to Remember... In the South, we are - TopicsExpress

Use Hospitality One to Remember... In the South, we are somewhat famous for hospitality. But in reality this is not an exclusive Southern trait. In the Bible, from Leviticus to Hebrews, hospitality is all the rage. And no matter where you go in this big world, theres always someone ready to dish out a warm welcome or a liberal dose of neighborliness. When I was a child, people often stopped by out house unannounced. Weve got company! Id call out as I headed for the door. Youd never know who might be standing on the porch: a relative, a neighbor, or a long lost friend. Whoever it was, they were invited in and royally entertained. If my mother didnt have a fresh baked cake on hand, a big smile would spread across my daddys face. Come on in and make yourselves at home, hed say. Ill be back in a jiffy. And off hed go to Toddle House, a nearby restaurant that was part of a chain famouse for its pie. In no time hed be back with a delectable pie, rich and chocolaty, to die for, we might say today. It seems that weve lost a bit of that spontaneity, and people dont just drop in anymore. But a few years ago, I happened on a recipe that, with a bit of tweaking, replicates that old time pie. And while I cant bring back those days when people felt free to visit unannounced, I can recall the delight by whipping up one of those pies. Ive read recently that theres been some effort to build on the flavor of more neighborly times by designing a new wave of front porch subdivisions. I hope it works. In the meantime, maybe each of us can create our own brand of hospitality and work to make our homes and neighborhoods into places where no one is a stranger. With a new year ahead and a good recipe for pie or vegetable soup or fresh baked muffins, take the first step and invite a neighbor in!
