Useful Information Regarding Dog Microchipping Dog - TopicsExpress

Useful Information Regarding Dog Microchipping Dog microchipping became a requirement under legislation in April 2012. It is no longer possible to licence a dog without including a valid microchip number for your dog. This simple, safe modern identification method is permanent and can`t be removed, so even if your dog loses its collar, or if someone steals your dog we can still trace it by its microchip. When your dog has been implanted with a microchip, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the dog is registered with the providing company (e.g. Petlog, AniBase). Failing to register your dog will invalidate your licence and may leave you subject to a fixed penalty. Microchipping is a very effective and secure way of permanently identifying your dog. Once microchipped, the unique identification number is registered to the animal and the owner’s details are placed on a national data base. The microchip is simply injected under the dog’s skin between its shoulder blades. No anaesthetic is required and the procedure should not cause any more discomfort than a standard vaccination. The microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice, works through radio wave frequency and will last up to 20 years. If the dog is picked up by a dog warden, they `scan` the dog to see if it has been chipped and if they find a chip, they can find his owner by checking the ID number against the database. All vets and some pet stores (e.g. Jollyes, Pets at Home) can microchip your dog, prices range between £10 and £20. The Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest animal charity, currently provides a reduced price microchipping service at £9.50, but is completely free for pensioners and for those who are claiming any means tested benefits (contact Dogs Trust for further information 028 2565 2977). Due to support from the Dogs Trust, free microchipping is also offered for all dogs rehomed from the Council kennels.
