#VIC 2 Flood watches Flood Watch (1) for North East Victoria (Upper Murray, Mitta Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens and King Catchments) Issued at 3:38 pm EST on Tuesday 11 June 2013 A high pressure system is moving eastwards across the Tasman Sea. A low pressure system just south of Tasmania has an associated trough that is located over western Bass Strait. The trough will only move slowly eastwards today to central parts of Bass Strait and the low will move southeast of Tasmania. A second low located at the head of the Bight will move into South Australia today and is expected to track eastwards over New South Wales on Wednesday before intensifying just east of Victoria on Thursday. The low is likely to only move slowly to the northeast on Friday. Areas of rain and the chance of isolated thunderstorms have been forecast for the North East catchments during Wednesday and into Thursday. Rainfall totals of 20 to 50 mm have been forecast with locally higher falls possible. The forecast rainfall is expected to cause significant stream rises with the possibility of minor flooding developing in the North East catchments from Wednesday afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue catchment specific warnings if and when required. Note: This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if the Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Widespread rain with heavy falls are forecast for the Goulburn and Broken Basins during Wednesday with forecast rainfall totals ranging from 20 to 50mm. Patchy rain is forecast for the Goulburn and Broken basins during Thursday. The forecast rainfall combined with periods of potentially intense rainfall associated with thunderstorms is expected to cause stream rises in the Goulburn and Broken catchments with the possibility of Minor flooding developing late Wednesday into Thursday.
