Vegetable production on rise in Kashmir : Sachnews Jammu Kashmir BILAL HABIB SRINAGAR, MAY 26: With a view to encourage cultivation of vegetable by the people in their Kitchen Gardens in Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir Division, the Agriculture Department Kashmir has distributed 7000 tool kits with an appropriate package of seeds and seedlings to the interested kitchen garden holders on 75 percent subsidy during the current Kharief season. This was revealed by Director Agriculture Kashmir, Mushtaq Peerzada while opening the sale of vegetable seedlings from departmental kitchen garden at Lalmandi here today. On this occasion Director Agriculture was informed that since March 2014, 12 lac seedlings have been produced and distributed among the farmers from kitchen garden Lalmandi, thereby generating revenue of Rs. 4 lacs. The department is raising the seedlings of various vegetables like Knol Khol, Tomato, Brinjal, Chillies, and Cucumber etc. under protected conditions and distributes the same among the farmers on nominal charges. He was informed that this facility has generated a lot of interest among the vegetable growers who come to get the same from across the valley. Director Agriculture Kashmir informed that a target of raising 30 lac seedlings has been set this year for the kitchen garden. In addition the seedlings are also raised in the nurseries at district/ block level for the local farmers. Director Agriculture further informed that during current Kharief Hybrid seeds worth 2.5 crores were provided to the vegetable growers on 90 percent subsidy, while as last year, seeds worth 2 crore had been provided to the farmers, resulting in the export of 2.45 lac Metric Tons of vegetable during Kharief 2013, besides meeting a local requirements of Srinagar City and other towns of the division.
