Venezuelan man with muscular dystrophy finishes inspirational marathon run The Chicago Marathon saw its record time shattered, but that was far from the most impressive story to come from the race. The final person to cross the finish line of the Chicago Marathon was Venezuelan man Maickel Melamed who suffers from muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is an incurable disease that eventually damages muscles to a point where most sufferers are confined to a wheelchair. It took nearly 17 hours for Melamed to eclipse the finish line and when he did at about 1:30 on Monday morning, a crowd of about 100 supporters was there to greet him. He had a simple message to share: “If you dream it, make it happen.” Melamed has been running in marathons for two years. He previously competed in Berlin and New York City marathons. His official finish time was 16 hours and 46 minutes.
