Via Cat: So I need to say something here, and I say this with the utmost respect for the suffering that many families have gone through this week: the families of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, and this as yet unnamed Cairns family. For the people involved in both these incidents, the suffering is incalculable and all of it matters. But we get so caught up in the threat of terrorism, were busy discussing whether the Martin Place siege was a terrorist attack, the actions of a lone wolf, whether this is about Islam or religion or mental illness. We talk about how our systems have failed, how we can prevent these crimes, and how we should respond. But every day, domestic violence claims victims - especially women and children. Not only women and children, but mostly women and children. Indigenous families suffer this violence even more than other families do. Why arent we talking about how our systems are failing these Australians? How we can prevent domestic violence? Or how we should respond? Why arent stories of domestic violence plastered across the first thirteen pages of the Courier Mail? The Martin Place siege, as frightening and tragic as it was, was an isolated incident which killed three people including the perpetrator. This single act of domestic violence took eight lives, and domestic violence happens every day. Perspective, right?
