WEEK FIVE: DEVELOPING LAND FOR THE THINGS THAT COUNT IN LIFE. One of the many insane aspects of the Unitary Plan is the wonton development of precious land by developers who have no regard for Aucklanders or its environment. For them, its all about the money and bugger everyone else. They don’t care how ugly it looks or what habitat or burial ground they rip up. Social responsibility is limited only to telling Aucklanders half-truths in order to enrich themselves. This profiteering has expanded to the extortion of our elderly populations life savings; many of them from the War years. Promises of affordable housing for Aucklanders are forgotten as the laundered money from Communist China floods the real estate market. Unable to compete, the so called ‘mums and dads’ of Auckland are out-bid at every turn of the Auction. The real estate agents don’t care as they are commonly commission based. A first home is noting short of a blatant lie. As for the deplorable idea of making really fugly leaky apartment buildings with broom closet sized rooms, for international students to be charged $150 a week to share with another is the reality. Not only will the future residents further clog the roads with parked cars and create more sewage for our out-dated sewer system, but it will confirm the suspicion that Auckland is being turned into some kind of disgusting backwater avenue of Hong Kong; where everyone is packed in like sardines. I have a better idea than this. Why not forget the high rises and start developing cash crops on a massive scale. It is food that is needed to feed the hundreds of Auckland schools, our public hospitals and many rest homes. The educational factor of this would teach our children something more real than sitting in the classroom all day, learning stuff that wont even help any of them get a job after they leave school. And what about our lovable dog and horse population? There is not enough space on the public beaches for our pets to be properly exercised whilst allowing humans to enjoy a swim and a BBQ. For me, our pets and animals are much more important than a grotesque forest on illuminated high rise dust bowls of hanging laundry and noise. For many of our migrants and international students this is normal and it doesn’t seem to disturb them. But for most Aucklanders, this is not what is desired or wanted. It is not about being racist. It is more about what Aucklanders know what would work and what wont work in their city. Undermining this logic is a complete lack of vision and expertise in planning out our city and their spaceman program to increase the urbanisation of Auckland upwards towards the sky. There is little regard for the environment, social and local impacts and even less thought placed in how exactly this will impact on our children 30 years from now. I think Aucklanders get more sense from our pets than the legion of greedy developers and their cocaine fuelled grandiosity. What do you think whanau? Food and our pets before their spaceman program?
