WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL & ENCOURAGEMENT. Deuteronomy 8 is a beautiful dialogue between Moses and this fresh generation of Israelites ready to inhabit the land that God has prepared for them. 1) 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart... So often we pray for trials to end, for tiredness to cease, for pain to disappear. Could it be that God is using those hardships to develop you, to redefine you, to humble you, to test you? If God knows the plans he has for you, then the hardships must be a part of that journey. Maybe this is why Job said, Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10) Pray for perseverance, that Gods will would be done through both the good and bad that you face. Pray that God will be in control, and pray that you be able to stand strong within your unshakable identity in Christ. 2) ...man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. We need to be reminded, as did this generation of Israel, that it is not simply the food, water and material things of this world that sustain us; but it is the very words and living presence of God that brings true and full life. Jesus fulfils this ideology in John 6, when he declares, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry... Come to Jesus; your provider and your fulfilment. Despite the endurance and the hardships God will provide, he will refresh, restore, empower and be all that you need. 3) 6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land... Where is God leading you? He has plans to bring you hope and a future! Does that not excite you?!!? Walk in obedience and reverence of God; declare to him your total surrender of ambition, goals, passions, hurts and fears and watch how he will lead you into great things! Walk with Him! Remain in Christ so that he in turn may remain in you, that you may come to know the fruitfulness and the fulfilment that can only come from walking with him! 4) 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability... Jesus says in John 15, apart from me you can do nothing. Of course we can move, speak, work all off our own backs, but nothing of worth in the sight of God can be achieved unless there is unity with Jesus Christ. Let us not be naive to think that our strength is sufficient to live out the lives of fruitfulness that God has called us into. It is only by the ability given to us through God that we can thrive. Lean not on your own understanding, but be carried and led by the Spirit of God into the land, into the destiny that he has set apart for you! And Do Not Forget the Lord; through every good day, through every bad day give him the praise that he deserves. Amen. Fraser.
