WEEP FOR THE NATION! ================= Blood, blood, blood, rivers of blood, blood everywhere, so says old Gagool in the popular novel of days of yore, King Solomons Mines. This aptly depicts the bloody scenario of avoidable and senseless deaths and destructions that have sadly become a recurring decimal in our land. Boko Haram, road carnages, internecine bloodletting, extrajudicial killings, ritual/ occult murders, hired assassinations, kidnapping, gruesome robberies, mindless looting & pillaging of our treasury, threats of dismemberment of the country and eerie echoes of war etc. Cry, my beloved country! What a wasted country! What a wasted generation: suppressed, oppressed, depressed, despondent, despised, demoralised, despoiled and destroyed by their leaders (or looters) that have covenanted to tread the path ignoble, hold the country hostage and continually tempt the Almighty to whom power belongs. Driven by mammon, not manners; by venom and vices instead of virtues & values, they have become an unmitigated and embarrassing national albatross, stifling and suffocating a people hapless and helpless. The sword of Damocles will not tarry. The latest in their litany of sins is the avoidable & unacceptable sordid, sober, sorry, sad and shameful recruitment debacle of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) which extracted the blood of our youths to the altars of the principalities, powers, princes and (their) mortal agents delegated to our clime by Lucifer. Life in the country is increasingly becoming nasty, brutish and short. It is reported that NIS smiled to the bank with a whopping sum (hundreds of millions, nay billion of Naira) from fees/charges extorted from the exploited tribe of job seekers: blood money, daylight exploitation/robbery of the poor and the needy, abuse of authority and crass official wickedness against the same people that have been pauperised by successive governments. NIS is a Government establishment run or maintained by tax payers money. The duty of Government is to pursue and provide maximum welfare, happiness and security for the people. Even private companies that are profit driven do not charge recruitment fees. It is a business expense. Infact, in some cases, applicants are served refreshments and their travel cost borne or subsidised by the company. Government is about welfare and security, not profit. The Comptroller General of NIS and the supervising minister should be, as part of their punishment, relieved of their jobs for the unconscionable slothfulness and shabbiness with which the exercise was handled, and the proceeds of this show of shame refunded in whatever way possible. If they escape the sanctions of men, they cannot hide from God. He that oppresses the poor pitches himself against God. What a country! What culture of indiscipline and impunity! What craze for filthy lucre! I am short of words. God help us. Pedro Iragbonse. Motivational Speaker
