WORKING WITH THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES: Knowing others, discovering our forgotten roots. Allow me to share with you the film that we have produced - Memories of Mountains, Memories of Gold. This is produced by the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI). This film is about the story of the Subanen and Higaunon indigenous peoples that we are helping in order to have better control of the precious resources in their territories. As I worked with them for years, I discovered that I am not just working with them but also discovering my forgotten past. By knowing their daily lives, customs, traditions, rituals and belief systems, I came to realize that I am also having a glimpse of my tribes forgotten past. In the narratives of these tribes, they mentioned of their links, blood ties and similar customs and traditions of people from other islands. Since, they live in Northern Mindanao, they are closer to the Visayas, hence, I believe they shared similar customs and traditions with our pre-Hispanic ancestors. Today the see seems to divide us but for the IPs and our ancestors, the seas, the rivers and the bodies of water connects them. Come... lets have a glimpse of our forgotten past in the lives of the Indigenous Peoples.
