We have a coconut tree in our back yard here at our house in Dar es Salaam. I mentioned to our maid Ashura, that we should get a coconut down and see how good they are. Next thing I know, she gets our guard, damn it I can pronounce his name, to help us getting one down. So Im just standing back watching as a couple of coconuts are soon handed to me - they are pretty good but smaller and not as tasty as our Caribbean coconuts. Anyway, the harvest process was quite easy - at least for me. Ashura our maid, lives here in the maid quarters Monday - Friday and makes about $180 US a month. She speaks a little English - native language is Swahili. Paolo, our gardener, works 5 1/2 days and makes and makes about $80 US and speaks almost no English. They both are hard workers and seem quite happy to have their jobs. The guards are supplied and paid by the US Embassy and Im sure in the same earnings range.
