We have more claim to Musa إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَاتِلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ كَافَّةً كَمَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ كَافَّةً ۚ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ [ Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein and fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).] Quran 9:36 Muharram Four of those 12 months are sacred; the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Shaban. [Reported by al-Bukhari, 2958] Weve now reached the month of Muharram. Its called Muharram because it is a sacred month and to confirm its sanctity. This year Muharram started on Tuesday the 5th of November. I got a lot of messages of people wishing each other a happy new year. I believe that this al began when muslims all over the world wanted to distinguish themselfes from non-muslims, especially after 911, like we have our own new-year. In fact, this whole wishing each other a happy new year is bida. The most evil affairs are the innovations/bida (Muslim Hadith 1885), so lets stop doing that. Ashura [After the hijrah when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madina, he found that the jews in Madina also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We have more claim to Musa than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day.] Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865 [Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (saws) fasted on the day of Ashura and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said: O Messenger of Allah (saws) , it is a day that the jews and christians honor. The Prophet (saws) said, When the following year comes--Allah willing--we shall fast (also) on the ninth. The death of the Prophet (saws) came before the following year.] Muslim and Abu Dawud The word Ashura literally means 10th as it is on the 10th day of Muharram. The practice of fasting on Ashura was known even in the days of Jahiliyyah, before the Prophets ( صلى الله عليه و سلم ) mission. Fasting on Ashura was a gradual step in the process of introducing fasting as a prescribed obligation in Islam; the obligation was transferred from the fast of Ashura to the fast of Ramadan. And thats how fasting of Ashura had become voluntary (nafl). There is nothing wrong with fasting only on Ashura. Shaykh ul-Islam said: Fasting on the day of Ashura is an expiation for a year, and it is not makruh to fast only that day. [Al-Fatawa al-Kubra, part 5]. Expiation The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و سلم ) said: For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before. [Muslim, 1976] This is from the bounty of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) towards us: for fasting one day He gives us expiation for the sins of a whole year, الله أكبر. And Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) is the owner of great bounty, ذو الجلال و الإكرام. So if you fast on Ashura it is not 100% sure that your minor sins will be expiated. The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و سلم ), the messenger of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), hopes that Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) will accept his fasting as expiation for the previous year! He hopes! And we assume that our fasting on the day of Ashura expiates our minor sins. No! We should hope for it, make dua for it! Ibn al-Qayyim said: This misguided person does not know that fasting in Ramadhan and praying five times a day are much more important than fasting on the day of Arafah and Ashura, and that they expiate for the sins between one Ramadhan and the next, or between one Friday and the next, so long as one avoids major sins. But they cannot expiate for minor sins unless one also avoids major sins; when the two things are put together, they have the strength to expiate for minor sins. Among those deceived people may be one who thinks that his good deeds are more than his sins, because he does not pay attention to his bad deeds or check on his sins, but if he does a good deed he remembers it and relies on it. This is like the one who seeks Allahs forgiveness with his tongue (i.e., by words only), and glorifies Allah by saying Subhanallah one hundred times a day, then he backbites about the Muslims and slanders their honour, and speaks all day long about things that are not pleasing to Allah. This person is always thinking about the virtues of his tasbihat (saying Subhanallah) and tahlilat (saying La ilaha illallah) but he pays no attention to what has been reported concerning those who backbite, tell lies and slander others, or commit other sins of the tongue. They are completely deceived. [Al-Mawsuah al-Fiqhiyyah, part 31, Ghurur] We should bring ourselves closer to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) by taking advantage of this opportunity on Ashura by fasting and praying for forgiveness
