We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (inclusively) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The above quote is arguably the favorite and most revered statement in the US Declaration of Independence, which millions of Americans are celebrating today. It celebrates freedom from the control, domination and tyranny of the British government over the 13 original colonies which in 1776 became the United States of America. It is the sacred document of our founding as a nation, one whose national anthemic motto is In God We Trust. It denotes freedom of religion along with freedom from it. For the most part, our country honors the first part, freedom of religion, but freedom from it is more difficult and challenging. Religion, particularly Christianity, is so deeply inculcated in our national psyche, that separation, freedom or independence from it is all but impossible. The word independent means to be free from outside control; not depending on anothers authority. To depend on something or someone means to be controlled or determined by it or them. Interdependence is a term that renders the person more individuality, where dependency can be and usually is a kind of debilitation and is generally unhealthy. My so-called rants about religious fundamentalism is my personal passion to see people freed from the control and manipulation of what can be and has essentially been, cruel and oppressive (tyrannical) governing or rule of mind, spirit and culture for millennia by its institutional dogmatic influence on millions of people. I am not discouraging faith in God, I just want people to beware of what kind of God they have faith in. I think it is more important what Jesus said about God than what the church says about Jesus. More than a Personal God creating us, we as humans tend to create our own personal gods. And those gods are more in our image (imaginations) than we are in theirs. Being in touch and in tune with your spirit preempts dependency on institutionalized religion and creates the experience of self and soul actualization, something Jesus was exemplary of and taught with and through his life.
