What Every Santa Should Know About A First Telescope You want easy to use. Get a Dobsonian. You want light gathering to make the hard to see easier to see. You want portable so that you can go where other observers are to learn from and with them. Get a Dobsonian You want 2 inch focuser for 2 inch diameter eyepieces so that you do not need to upgrade when you understand why you want 2 inch eyepieces. You want a zero magnification pointing aide because magnification is your enemy when pointing the scope. You want the scope with the biggest mirror that will fit in most cars. You want a 10 Dobsonian. You may out grow it but you will be glad you started here. You can buy less but you will be throwing away 1/3 to 1/2 of what you will wish you had from the get go. NO. Spend the money on eye pieces. Not unless you have already bought the Next Year eye pieces above and some sky charts and you have money burning a hole in your pocket. Get better and more optics not hard to understand and hard to use electronics.
